Williams’ Departure and Contract Details
According to ESPN’s renowned reporter Adrian Wojnarowski, the Detroit Pistons have officially fired head coach Monty Williams after a dismal season. Despite having five years and $65 million remaining on his contract, the Pistons will still pay out the remainder of his salary.
Williams’ Coaching Career and Hiring by Pistons
Monty Williams, a two-time NBA Coach of the Year, was dismissed by the Phoenix Suns last season. He had initially planned to take a year off from the league to care for his wife, who is battling cancer. However, the Pistons presented him with a six-year, $78.5 million contract, making it the largest coaching contract in NBA history at the time. Williams accepted the role and took on the challenge of rebuilding the Pistons under the then-General Manager Troy Weaver.
Disappointing Season Performance
Despite the substantial investment in Williams, the Pistons did not see an improvement in their performance. This season, they recorded a league-worst 14-68 record and suffered a 28-game losing streak, the longest in a single season. The 14-68 record is now the worst in the team’s history.
